R.I.P Sean Taylor

Another guy who died way too young. RIP Sean. A UM and NFL standout.

Washington Redskins defensive back Sean Taylor died Tuesday morning, a day after he was shot by an intruder at his home in Palmetto Bay.

He was 24.

The one-time standout with the Miami Hurricanes died at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, where he was airlifted after the shooting Monday morning.

Shot in the groin, he suffered massive blood loss from a severed femoral artery. Surgery conducted later in the afternoon could not save him, although he was able to squeeze a doctor's hand, giving his family reason for hope.

That hope was crushed before dawn Tuesday.

Family and other loved ones, who maintained a vigil overnight, were seen leaving the hospital in tears.

The gunman remained on the loose.

''This is just such a tragic, horrible, unnecessary death -- another example of the incessant violence in this city and this country,'' Richard Sharpstein, Taylor's attorney, said early Tuesday morning.

AT THE SCENE

His client, born and raised in west Perrine, was a paradox. On and off in recent years, he found himself in trouble with the law and once was fined by the NFL for spitting in the face of an adversary. But he was also praised by teammates and others for his kindness and maturity, especially since the birth of his infant daughter.

''From the first day I met him, from then to now, it's just like night and day,'' Redskins receiver James Thrash said before Taylor's death was reported.

Taylor is the son of Florida City's police chief, Pedro Taylor, who called Sharpstein at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday with the news.

''His father called and said he was with Christ and he cried and thanked me,'' Sharpstein said.

Through their website, the Washington Redskins released a statement from owner Daniel M. Snyder, who flew to Miami Monday with Vice President Vince Cerrato and Clinton Portis, a teammate of Taylor's at both UM and in Washington, to be at Taylor's side.

''This is the worst imagineable tragedy,'' Snyder said. ``Our thoughts and prayers are with Sean's family.''

For the tight-knit family of current and former members of the Miami Hurricanes football team, it is another grievous loss. Several have died prematurely, of car crashes, a plane crash -- and shootings.

Miami-Dade patrol officers received the call that Taylor had been shot about 1:45 a.m. Monday.

Taylor and his girlfriend were startled awake by noises in his sprawling home on Old Cutler Road. Taylor grabbed a machete from underneath his bed and went to investigate.

He didn't get far. An armed intruder fired at least one shot. Taylor tumbled back into the bedroom, fatally wounded in the groin, Sharpstein said.

Sharpstein said the couple's baby daughter was also in the bedroom and slept through the shooting. The gunman fled immediately after firing.

''Nothing was stolen. They shot at him and fled,'' Sharpstein said.

He said phone lines to the home had been cut and that Taylor's girlfriend had to call 911 on a cellphone.

Among the first responders was George Mira Jr., who lettered as a linebacker at UM from 1984-87 and is now a fire battalion chief. Detective Juan Villalba, a Miami-Dade police spokesman, said police were interviewing relatives who were potential witnesses.

Only eight days before, according to police records, someone had broken into Taylor's house between 7 p.m. Nov. 17 and midnight Nov. 18. The intruder, who pried open a front window, entered several rooms and rifled through drawers and a safe in the bedroom.

In that incident, someone left a kitchen knife on a bed, the police report says.

''They're really sifting through that incident and today's incident,'' Miami-Dade Detective Mario Rachid said, ``to see if there's any correlation.''

Retirees Pat and Jim Smith, who live next door to Taylor, said they heard voices outside about 2:30 a.m. Monday. Outside, Jim Smith talked to a woman with a baby in her arms who he believes is Taylor's nanny. She mentioned the previous break-in.

''I am going to make sure my gun is loaded,'' Jim Smith said. ``We never did have any problems here.''

PLAYING CAREER

Taylor, a graduate of Gulliver Preparatory School in Pinecrest, was chosen by the Redskins as the fifth pick overall in the National Football League's 2004 draft.

He signed a seven-year, $18 million contract after his junior year at UM, when his nine interceptions were the most in the Big East Conference and second in the nation.

At UM, he was an All-American, a Jim Thorpe Award finalist for best defensive back in the nation and the Big East Defensive Player of the Year.

This season, he was sidelined indefinitely Nov. 11 when he sprained his right knee against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Redskins lost to the Buccaneers in Tampa on Sunday.

UM officials weighed in, saying, ``This is a terrible thing to have happened to a great person, and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and teammates.''

Taylor is no stranger to controversy.

Before he was drafted, he was rebuked by the NFL for leaving the league's mandatory rookie symposium early, and drew a $25,000 fine.

ASSAULT CASE

He was arrested in June 2005 on felony charges of waving a gun at people he believed had stolen his all-terrain vehicle. He later pleaded no contest to misdemeanor assault and battery. Sharpstein said Taylor was the victim and that he should not have been charged.

After the plea, Ryan Lee Hill, a member of the group that Taylor had allegedly accosted, sued Taylor. In the suit, which is pending, Hill claimed Taylor hit him repeatedly in a fight and brandished a gun at him, and said he had lost wages and had medical bills because of injuries.

''Totally garbage and untrue,'' Sharpstein said Monday of Hill's account.

After the fight, Taylor, friend Michael McFarlane and a man named Charles Caughman went to McFarlane's house in West Perrine, according to court records of the incident. Soon afterward, a silver car pulled up to McFarlane's house and someone opened fire, peppering Taylor's GMC Yukon Denali with bullets. Police found 27 bullet casings outside, and at least 15 shots hit Taylor's car. No one was hit, and the shooting remains unsolved.

McFarlane has since moved out of the small ranch home on Southwest 104th Avenue. The current renter on Monday showed a visitor bullet holes that remain over a front window.

CHANGING HIS LIFE

Taylor's cousin, Florida State University safety Anthony Leon, said Taylor was trying to shed some troublemaking friends he had grown up with. Leon, who said he spent his morning crying and praying in his dorm room, said Taylor had ``started to calm down.''

''He's been trying to stay away from bad company -- especially for his daughter's sake,'' Leon said. ``Sean wasn't a bad guy at all. He's got his personality on the football field and off it. All he was trying to do was protect his family. And they shot him.''

Miami Herald staff writers Patricia Mazzei, Manny Navarro, Evan S. Benn, Susannah A. Nesmith and the Associated Press contributed to this report.

Lorenzo White Junior

Lorenzo White is emerging as one of the top defensive back prospects in South Florida this year and the Fort Lauderdale (Dillard) standout talked about the latest on the recruiting front.

Lorenzo White isn't a household recruiting name yet but that may soon change. After a strong spring and a couple good camp performances, word is spreading about the standout defender.
"I've just been going to camps and getting ready for the season," White said. "I went to the Michigan State camp and ran a 4.42. I went to the Miami camp and did real good and then I went to Rutgers and had a great time."

White, 6-feet and 175 pounds, talked more about his three camps.

"Michigan State was real nice," he said. "The coaches were real cool and I really enjoyed myself up there. They've offered me and they're one of the top schools I'm looking at. At Miami, they had a lot of top talent and I enjoyed the competition. I'm talking to them some but not as much (as the others). I did great at Rutgers. I went up against guys like Aldarius Johnson, DJ from Booker T., and Brandon Harris. I saw good competition and enjoyed that."

The talented defensive back claims four offers right now and a few others that he's hoping to land them from.

"I got them from Michigan State (cornerback), Central Michigan, Louisiana Lafayette, and Ole Miss (cornerback)," he said. "Rutgers is talking about it but hasn't yet. South Carolina might soon offer too. I might go to Alabama and Auburn's camp later but I'm not sure yet. My top five would be Michigan State, Central Michigan, Auburn, Alabama, and South Carolina."

When asked for a favorite, White pointed out two schools.

"I'd say it's between the two Michigan schools I mentioned," he said. "I'm gonna check out what they offer for my major (sports broadcasting) and athletics wise, I wanna see the rate of putting players into the NFL."

White, who carries a 2.45 GPA and a passing SAT score, finished his junior season with over 100 tackles, five interceptions, and two defensive

The Underwear King

From the popular online guide to marketing on the Internet. Available at www.UnderwearKing.com

Most of you probably have questions, so I'll take a stab at answering them here and save all of us some time away from emailing each other.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q. Will you be able to answer questions we may have after we purchase the eBook?

A. Yes. If not me personally, someone from my staff will. I like hearing from people and knowing what sort of projects they undertake on the web.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q. Do you offer consulting or guidance for web projects?

A. Yes, in some cases. Contact me via email and should your idea garner interest, we'll submit a proposal for consulting.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q. How much money do you think one can make by promoting affiliate programs like ClickBank and Commission Junction?

A. With any business, results will vary. Some people just won't make it in their pursuit of working strictly online; it's a fact of life. Not all people find the right niche, some lack drive, and some lack the discipline that certain projects will require. For this reason I make no claims of income, however as many people do make their living online, you can too with the right game plan and dedication.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q. When do you work? Do you have a set schedule?

A. Although I do make it a routine to fire up the computer each morning to check statistics and make sure my commission payments are arriving, I do NOT have a set schedule. Sometimes I'll wake up, order food, and just work until I tire. Other times I'll go to the beach all day, go out at night, and log on at midnight and see what happens. It's all about when you have the focus, and feel up to putting forth your best effort and ideas. Sometimes I'll wake up in the middle of the night with a new idea on how I can optimize a campaign, and just start working. The beauty of working online is that you can work whenever, wherever you want.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q. Do you really work in your underwear?

A. Yes. And I even tell you more about what I wear in the eBook. By the way, your tie is crooked and your hair is messed up.

Your Sh*t's Weak! Wizzeak

R.I.P. Herb Carneal

Herb Carneal (May 10, 1923 - April 1, 2007) was a Major League Baseball announcer. Since 1962, he had been a play-by-play voice of Minnesota Twins radio broadcasts, becoming the lead announcer in 1967 after Ray Scott left to work exclusively with CBS. His mellow baritone voice and laid-back demeanor were well-loved by Twins fans. His enduring nickname was "The Voice of the Twins."
A Richmond, Virginia native, Carneal first broadcast major league games for the Philadelphia Athletics and Philadelphia Phillies in 1954. From 1957 to 1961 he was employed by the Baltimore Orioles.
Since 2002, Carneal had scaled back his work commitment to providing play-by-play for one-half of Twins home games only. By 2007, he was scheduled to work only 36 games. As of 2007, Carneal worked in partnership with fellow radio commentators John Gordon, and Dan Gladden.
Carneal received the Ford C. Frick Award from the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1996, and was inducted into the Pavek Museum of Broadcasting's Hall of Fame in 2004.
Herb Carneal died on April 1, 2007 of congestive heart failure. [1]

Landon Donovan hat-trick gives USA 3-1 win over Ecuador
Florida, March 26: Landon Donovan scored a hat-trick as the United States beat Ecuador 3-1 in a friendly international in Tampa, Florida on Sunday. Felipe Caicedo equalised for Ecuador after Donovan opened the scoring in the first minute of the game. Two more goals for Donovan in the second half gave the striker the second hat-trick of his career. The USA hosted Ecuador in a friendly international on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Tampa, Florida.Over 31,000 fans turned up at the Raymond James Stadium. They had barely had time to find their seats before Landon Donovan put the US ahead with a superb strike from the edge of the area, after Ivan Hurtado's header had fallen kindly.Later in the first half, Tim Howard did well to save from Carlos Tenorio. But Ecuador were on level terms soon after. In the 11th minute, Felipe Caicedo held off the attentions of the USA's defenders before bundling the ball over Howard and into the net.The teams went into half-time at 1-1. In the 66th minute, Donovan put the US ahead once again after being put clear by Brian Ching. And less than a minute later, Donovan fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner to complete a superb hat-trick and give the USA a 3-1 victory. It was the second hat-trick of Donovan's career. The 25 year-old forward scored four goals against Cuba during the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup.He has now scored 30 international goals.Bureau Report

Blood Clots Suck

Thrombus
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

Blood clot diagram.
A thrombus, or blood clot, is the final product of the blood coagulation step in hemostasis. It is achieved via the aggregation of platelets that form a platelet plug, and the activation of the humoral coagulation system (i.e. clotting factors). A thrombus is physiologic in cases of injury, but pathologic in case of thrombosis.
Specifically, a thrombus is a blood clot in an intact blood vessel. A thrombus in a large blood vessel will decrease blood flow through that vessel. In a small blood vessel, blood flow may be completely cut-off resulting in the death of tissue supplied by that vessel. If a thrombus dislodges and becomes free-floating, it is an embolus.
Some of the conditions in which blood clots develop include atrial fibrillation (a form of cardiac arrhythmia), heart valve replacement, a recent heart attack, extended periods of inactivity (see deep venous thrombosis), and genetic or disease-related deficiencies in the blood's clotting abilities.
Preventing blood clots reduces the risk of stroke, heart attack and pulmonary embolism. Heparin and warfarin are often used to inhibit the formation and growth of existing blood clots, thereby allowing the body to shrink and dissolve the blood clots through normal methods (see anticoagulant).
A thrombus differs from a hematoma by:
Having high hematocrit
Being non-laminar
Being soft and friable
Having an absence of circulation
Virchow's Triad describes the conditions necessary for thrombus formation:
Changes in vessel wall morphology (e.g. trauma, atheroma)
Changes in blood flow through the vessel (e.g. valvulitis, aneurysm)
Changes in blood composition (e.g. leukaemia, hypercoagulability disorders)
Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) involves widespread microthrombi formation throughout the majority of the blood vessels. This is due to excessive consumption of coagulation factors and fibrinolysis using all of the body's available platelets and clotting factors. The end result is ischaemic necrosis of the affected tissue/organs and spontaneous bleeding due to the lack of clotting factors. Causes are septicaemia, acute leukaemia, shock, snake bites or severe trauma. Treatment involves the use of fresh, frozen plasma to restore the level of clotting factors in the blood.

Bad Luck Continues

As if not being able to close on a house in 4 months wasn't bad enough....

The architects we use for our project invited me to play soccer last night....nobody great, just a group of guys that rents an hour each wednesday to stay in shape. 10 minutes into it and feeling really good about everything the carpet slipped from underneath the concrete and I rolled my ankle over. Broke my foot in 3 places. Of course I kept playing, just hung in back and even played in goal, but I couldnt plant on my right foot at all. I iced all night and after not being able to walk to the counter to get coffee this am, I had my driver take me to the ER. I have an ankle high cast for at least 3 weeks. It sucks.

College Days

The Alamo, known as the house in St. Joseph without a basement. What a place! For $166.67 per month, the six of us packed it in the 3 bedroom double wide trailer for our Junior year. Each Thursday, a theme party rocked the neighborhood and usually ended when the kegs went dry and the liqour stores were no longer open. Highlights include broken windows, Boone's & Beverly nights, and many, many Old English 40'z. Not to mention a sweet landlord, who once screamed "You guys are drunks." The funny part was, he was wasted wnen he said that.

Fun At The Lake

Nate Kirschner's cabin served as the spot for tubewars and fireworks being shot out of parts of people's body. There was lots of Leinenkugels Beer and of course Don Julio tequila. Even Pete poured a shot on Nate's sister in law, and retorted "thats how I roll." We look forward to 2007's version when Nate Junior will be around to enjoy the celebration.

Super Bowl 2007

So Miami had the Super Bowl and thousands of freezing fans from Indianapolis and Chicago descended on my little town of South Beach to take part in the festivities. ESPN had all of their shows broadcasted from South Beach's Ocean Drive, as did the NFL Network and some other shows. One of the highlights for me was being on the Jim Rome is Burning show in the background and giving the unsuspecting viewers (at least those who cared to watch the background shots) a "SUCK IT" sign like the Degeneration X did when they dominated the WWF. If you were watching Jim talk to Dante Stallworth of the Eagles, you may have seen me in my black Deion Sanders Atlanta Falcons throwback jersey.

Another nice little highlight was being interviewed for NBC channel 6 news. I still have not seen the broadcast, but my accountant confirmed it ran and I was on there plugging Andre Rison's parties and telling how annoying fans from out of town can be.

All in all, a great weekend. My man Pedro and his brother in law visited too. We went out to Bricks Nightclub for a gala event, that ended up being a blast but having about 1% of the celebrities in attendance that were "confirmed." After going to Mark and Susans wedding and flying into Tampa, I was delayed until almost 4:30 pm and didnt arrive at the bar for the Super Bowl party until almost 6pm. Luckily, my comrads Carmine SantaMaria and Hashim Burney were able to scoop up my friends from up north so we could meet at the Parrot Bar, a Philly-oriented bar in Ft. Lauderdale, where we watched the big game. Colts fans dominated the crowd, and Pedro sprained his thumb while he cheered for Devin Hesters kick return on the opening kick!

Lorenzo White and Andre Rison were up there cheering on the Colts, to my dismay. Andre played as a Colt as a rookie before being traded to the ATL where he thrived. Lo likes Peyton Manning....I don't know why! I said if the Bears were to win I'd get in a 3 point stance and make a run at tackling Lo. Obviously that didn't happen. After the game, we checked out a few "adult clubs' and had some beverages. My friend also puked on himself at Pure Platinum....and I tackled a blow up Green Bay Packer doll after bribing the valet $10. I then killed iit with my key and ruined it for good. I hate the Packers!

The day after the game led us to a Casino Cruise, where one of my friends won $1,000 and I won a couple hundred. Latenight Solid Gold was "pretty sweet" and we took shots til 5 in the morning.....I love when people visit. of course everyone except me slept in until about 1 pm the next day while I ran errands. Of course his flight was canceled that night and he was stuck in Ft. Lauderdale....exhausted!

Mark & Susan's Wedding

A longtime friend, Mark Dodge, was married over the weekend to Susan Dietrich. Hopefully I spelled her prior last name correctly! The wedding was in Clearwater Beach, Florida, and a lot of our old soccer bunch was in attendance.
